The Fastest Man On The Planet has announced his retirement from professional racing.

James Stewart Jr., a.k.a. “Bubba,” has posted his retirement notice online, announcing it through his gear company Seven.

Stewart hasn’t raced professionally since 2016, but he’s one of the most successful motorcycle racers ever, cleaning up in Supercross and outdoor motocross events for years. He won two SX championships and took 50 AMA Supercross premier class wins, second only to Jeremy McGrath. He also won three AMA Pro Motocross championships, with an undefeated season in 2008 (Ricky Carmichael is the only other racer to accomplish the flawless season in AMA Pro Motocross). Stewart’s 20 career 250/450 wins in AMA Pro Motocross are good for fifth all-time in that division, and his 28 wins in the 125/250 class are tops overall.

Stewart also win the Red Bull Straight Rhythm event in 2014 and 2015, won an X Games medal in 2009, and had many other riding successes.

However, it was off the track that Stewart perhaps saw the most success. He made a massive amount of money through sponsorships, bringing not only the usual industry money to the table (and lots of it!), but also inking deals with big players outside the moto world.

For the most part, Stewart didn’t dominate on the bigger bikes later in his career in the same way he did on the smaller bikes at the start, although he certainly had plenty of success. He lost a lot of time to injuries and other issues, including an FIM doping ban, when Stewart failed to get proper exemption paperwork for his medically prescribed banned substance.

However, he’ll go down in history as a huge star of off-road racing, and in the long run, probably best-known for inventing the Bubba Scrub, a move that you gotta have in the playbook if you want to win in the big MX races these days.
