Indian Recalling 2019 Chieftain For Taillight Issue

Indian Motorcycle is recalling its 2019 Indian Chieftan for an issue stemming from the rear taillight.  The problem revolves around the taillight being too close in brightness to the brake light.

According to NHTSA campaign number 19V638000, the Chieftan’s taillight’s brightness is so close to its brake light brightness that other drivers may have difficulty discerning whether the motorcycle is braking.

The lighting issue causes the Chieftan’s lighting to fall outside the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”

This is the second time the Chieftan model has been recalled for a lighting issue.  That recall was to correct the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) to ensure that all front lighting would not go out unexpectedly while riding.

A total of 3,147 Chieftans are subject to this recall.  Indian will notify owners of affected motorcycles to take it to a dealer for repair.  Dealers will update the engine control module software to correct the taillight’s intensity.  The repair is free of charge.

For further information, owners may contact Indian customer service at (877) 204-3697 and cite Indian’s recall number I-19-04.  Owners may also contact NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at (888) 327-4236.

This recall is already underway.
