The Triumph Street Triple RS was finally officially revealed this week, after much teasing, and it shows just how far streetfighters have come.

Back when the original streetfighters were unveiled (Triump Speed Triple, Ducati Monster), they weren’t what you’d call high tech. They were based on the street bikes of the day, not race bikes, and they weren’t even the most up-to-date street bikes at that time.

Now, consider the Street Triple RS. Not only does it have all the latest electro-gadgetry (Bluetooth-enabled TFT screen, switchable traction control, switchable ABS, up/down quickshifter, and all sorts of other gadgetry enabled by the ride-by-wire throttle), it’s also got a racebred powerplant.

The RS now runs the same 765 cc inline triple that Triumph uses in the Daytona Moto2 sportbike, which is built using technology Triumph developed while making the 765 engines for the Moto2 roadracing series.

That means the newly updated naked bike has 121 hp and 58 lb-ft of torque, up from 116 hp and 57 lb-ft of torque for the 2019 RS model. There are five riding modes programmed into the engine as stock (Road, Rain, Sport, Track,  Rider-configurable). A slip/assist clutch is also standard.

To enable stoppies high speed braking, the Street Triple RS has Brembo four-piston calipers for its beefy front stoppers. The forks are fully-adjustable Showas, and the rear shock is an Ohlins STX40, also fully adjustable. The Street Triple comes with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires as stock.

Perhaps most tellingly, all the promo material for the RS seems to have been shot at a track. While the urban jungle used to be the natural home of the streetfighter, things are changing. Will we be calling these machines “trackfighters” in a few years? Maybe …
