The long-anticipated and eagerly awaited KTM 390 Adventure has finally been unveiled at EICMA. KTM says that its 2020 390 Adventure harnesses the attributes and DNA from the very popular KTM 790 Adventure.
KTM says the 390 Adventure is “…breezy, agile, and ideal entry model for riders keen to discover the ‘adventure’ sensation, this motorcycle offers added versatility for touring and light offroading. Using elements of the KTM 390 DUKE as a base, the KTM 390 ADVENTURE offers proximity to the feeling and performance found at the root of the all-conquering KTM 450 RALLY but with crucial A2 license compatibility and current Euro emissions standards as part of the package.”
The new machine features a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke 373 cc engine. It is equipped with electric start and achieves what KTM calls “impressive peak power with incredibly punchy torque.” Unfortunately, the new engine’s power and torque outputs have not yet been disclosed.
The 390 Adventure’s engine features twin overhead camshafts, four valves, and electronic fuel injection. Those attributes tied to a balancer shaft, deliver a smoother feel. KTM says the engine is lightweight and compact, and it is this construction that makes the bike more eco-friendly.

According to KTM, intake air travels a shortened distance into the combustion chamber and two catalytic converters. These two catalytic converters and a fuel tank ventilation system (EVAP system) improve emission-quality and prevent fuel vapors from being released into the environment.
The new 390 Adventure utilizes WP suspension on both ends. Fully adjustable WP APEX suspension components provide comfort, control, and the clearance to venture down more challenging roads.
The 390 Adventure’s WP APEX 43 mm upside-down fork graces the front end of the machine. This fork was originally developed for enduro riding, so it has the chops to bring you to out of the way places.
The fork setup features a spring on both sides, but each fork leg has a separate function: compression damping is fitted on the left side, while rebound is on the right. The system makes adjusting the forks easy with the twist of a dial on the top of the forks. The fitted WP APEX 43 mm fork provides 170 mm (~6.7 inches) of travel.
The 390 Adventure sports WP suspension components and includes a 43 mm Apex fork with ~ 6.7 inches of travel. The rear suspension hosts a WP shock with ~7 inches of travel.
A WP APEX shock absorber attaches to the rear of the KTM 390 ADVENTURE. It provides 170 mm (6.7 inches) of travel. The rear shock is adjustable and features adjustable spring preload and rebound damping and offers 177mm (~7 inches) of travel. KTM says this setup can be fine-tuned to different situations, to balance KTM performance with all-day riding comfort.

Stopping power is provided by BYBRE. At the front is a single 320 mm brake disc, while a single 230 mm rear disk is attached to the rear. Clamping on those discs is a 4-piston radially mounted front caliper and a 2-piston floating rear caliper. The braking festivities are kept in check by a 2-channel ABS made by BOSCH.
BYBRE brakes handle braking. The front features a four-piston caliper gripping a 320 mm disc. At the rear, a two-piston caliper grasps a 230 mm disc.
The 390 Adventure features a slipper clutch. This is a somewhat unique feature for a bike of this size and weight. But KTM’s tagline is “Ready To Race” and that philosophy is likely why the device made it onto the 390 Adventure. KTM claims that the slipper clutch saves power and helps in slides.
The slipper clutch engages when the engine back-torque becomes too high. It helps prevent rear wheel chatter when braking sharply or decelerating. It also has the added benefit of giving the wheel just that little bit of braking for a controlled rear wheel slide.
The 390 ADVENTURE is fitted with a state-of-the-art engine management system (EMS), including a modern electronic fuel injection system with a 46 mm throttle body. It is managed through the use of a ride-by-wire process. Electronic sensors monitor throttle grip position via a servo motor and electronically translates the rider’s throttle commands into the optimum throttle valve position for the current riding situation and power delivery.
KTM says that the KTM 390 Adventure’s frame is similar to the 450 Rally bike. It features a lightweight, yet extremely stable trellis frame. The setup provides a forgiving balance of flex and stiffness. This setup, combined with a wheelbase of 1,430 +/- 15.5 mm (56.3 +/- 0.6 in) and a 26.5-degree steering head angle, points towards an offroad oriented layout. Still, the frame provides straight-line stability and precise and agile steering behavior.

The removable steel trellis subframe is fixed to the main frame with four screws. It was developed to be compact and lightweight, but strong enough to carry a passenger and luggage.
The die-cast, open-lattice swingarm is a signature element of the KTM ADVENTURE range. It offers optimal stiffness while still offering excellent flex characteristics. The WP rear shock links directly onto the swingarm, reducing complexity and parts and enhances the feel of the bike’s behavior.
To support longer-range adventuring, the 390 Adventure’s fuel tank shape provides a narrow knee area for better control. KTM says its 14.5-liter (3.8 gallons) capacity, in conjunction with its calculated fuel economy, can deliver more than 400 km (~250 miles) of non-stop exploring from a full tank.
Even with its “larger” fuel tank, the bodywork’s design allows good ergonomics, freedom of movement, and comfort. It also offers a lower seat height, while still providing sufficient ground clearance.
The two-piece seat is positioned for comfort and control on long rides. Seat height is a claimed 858 mm (33.7 inches). The rider’s seat is narrower in the front, making it easier to reach the ground.
The seat cover provides a tested mix of grip and easy movement, while the foam ensures the ride stays comfortable. The seat can be easily removed for access to the airbox as well as a small storage compartment.
KTM’s bigger-displacement adventure machines are fitted with a high-end, tapered aluminum handlebar that, importantly, provides a comfortable riding position and maximum control. This same setup is found on the 390 Adventure.
The 390 Adventure uses a fly-by-wire throttle system. At the left grip is the control switching for the bike’s electronics.
The left side handlebar console features an easily accessible menu switch for the TFT display. It lets you select various modes and connectivity features. To change settings, a rider simply flicks “up” and “down” through the menu, selects the desired setting with the right button, or go a step back with the left.
The 390 Adventure’s footpegs come directly from KTM’s offroad models. They were developed for all-day riding, standing or seated, for street or offroad boots. Rubber inserts provide more comfort when riding on the road and can be easily removed for more grip when heading off the beaten track.
KTM claims the 390 ADVENTURE’s windshield is an efficient deflector. Its profile allows the rider to move around the bike freely and offers an unobstructed view directly in front of the bike, even when covered in dirt. Its height can also be adjusted up or down to suit the rider´s size or needs.
The 390 Adventure’s windshield is adjustable.
KTM My Ride
The 390 Adventure comes standard with KTM’s KTM MY RIDE system. It allows a smartphone to be tethered to the bike. This enables you to make phone calls, listen to music, and use the optional turn-to-turn navigating app.
