The UK Moves Up Its ICE Vehicle Ban To 2035

The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Boris Johson has announced that the UK’s ban on internal combustion engine (ICE) powered (vehicles is moving from 2040 to 2035.  Far-reaching, the ban prohibits the sale of new gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles including hybrid vehicles and motorcycles.

The move is based upon the UK’s goal of being a Zero emissions nation by 2050.  Some climate experts say that 2040 is too late if the UK is to become a net-zero nation by 2050.

But the ban has met with opposition from automotive groups and others within the gasoline-powered industry.   Many argue that the earlier 2035 deadline is “unrealistic”.  They add that many people don’t want electric vehicles and that current demand for them is not high.

Some argue that charging an electric vehicle may require burning more fossil fuel than today’s conventional vehicles and there are other large sources of emissions that must be addressed.

According to the BBC:

The Committee on Climate Change, which advises government, said if other countries followed the UK, there was a 50-50 chance of staying below the recommended temperature rise of 1.5C by 2100. This is considered the threshold for dangerous climate change.

However, banning new petrol, diesel, and hybrid cars won’t be enough on its own.

The government will also need to tackle the emissions coming from energy generation. These are almost as high as from transport and come from things such as industry and people’s homes.

While the ban affects new car sales, UK citizens will still be able to buy used ICE vehicles or drive the one they currently own beyond 2035.
