MV Agusta, Beta shut down their plants

In the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown across Italy, some motorcycle manufacturers have been running skeleton crew operations at their plants, trying to be as productive as possible in spite of the ongoing disaster. Now, two more of them have announced they’re shutting down those minimalist operations as well. Both MV Agusta and Beta say they’re closing their plants.

MV Agusta says the move comes in compliance with new Italian government regulations (indeed, they’re changing constantly, just like all over the rest of the world, and it’s hard for anyone to keep track of exactly who they’re supposed to be in contact with, and who’s allowed to go to work, and where, and when). While the Schiranna plant will be closed starting Thursday, March 26, there will be administrative duties carried on off-site, but the actual building of bikes and parts will cease. According to the MV Agusta press release, “The remaining personnel will benefit from ‘Cassa Integrazione Guadagni’ or unused holiday allowances.” Maybe not the way you’d like to spend your vacation, but MV Agusta isn’t the only Italian manufacturer to use this ploy.

Beta, manufacturer of off-road motorcycles, also announced shutdown of its plant, effective this past Monday.  There’s good news if you’re worried about spares, though; the Beta Canada Facebook page said “The Betamotor factory is still able to process parts orders throughout the shutdown … We are shipping bikes and parts daily. We have been receiving regular parts orders and have a good supply for those that need it.” No doubt this is also true for customers in other markets.
