News reports are emerging that Australian Mat Mladin, the former seven-time AMA Superbike Champion and all-time career AMA Superbike win record holder, has been arrested. A criminal complaint alleges that Mladin engaged with several counts of sex acts with a child.
Roadracing World is reporting that Sydney, Australia’s tabloid newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, says that on March 13, Mladin was arrested by the Child Abuse Squad. Mladin now stands charged with two counts of intentionally carrying out a sex act on a child under 10; one count of intentionally incite a child to do a sexual act on him; and sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 10.
Due to unspecified medical reasons and the Coronavirus outbreak, Mladin had been jailed for nearly two weeks. After appearing before a Campbelltown local court magistrate via video link on March 13, Mladin was freed on $50,000 bail. Along with the bail payment, Mladin was required to surrender his passport. His bail conditions specify that he must be with a chaperone while visiting with a child under 16.
In making an application for Mladin’s lawyer told the court that his client planned to fight the allegations made against him.
“This is a matter which will obviously go to trial. There won’t be a plea of guilty.”
Mladin’s lawyer also questioned the strength of the police’s case. He went on to highlight that the accusations weren’t brought to the attention of the authorities until six months after the alleged incident.
Of course, Mladin is innocent until proven guilty. But if true, it’s a sad story.
