BMW Issues Recall for Brake Light Issue
BMW of North America, LLC is recalling over 4,000 motorcycles in the US for a brake light issue. The affected models were manufactured with an emergency stop function whereby the rear brake light flashes during emergency braking. This is not in compliance with US regulations, which require the brake light to stay on during braking, and not flash.
Recall campaign number 20V146000 was issued on March 12, 2020, and the recall is expected to begin May 4. According to BMW, the potential number of units affected in the US is 4,026.
Affected motorcycles can be taken to any authorized BMW dealership to have the issued remedied, free of charge. The dealership will use the bike’s VIN to determine if the fix is necessary. The remedy is software related, and no physical parts are required. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417, or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
Interestingly, several aftermarket kits are available to add this flashing brake light functionality to stock braking systems, in the name of increased safety. It is also common for automobiles to have a flashing light function turn on if the vehicle’s computers detect a crash.
