Stunt riders’ death on Deadpool 2 set results in fine just under $300k

After years of back-and-forth, the producers of Deadpool 2 have been fined for the death of stunt rider Joi Harris. Workplace safety authorities have ordered TCF Vancouver Productions LTD to pay $289,562 CAD over the incident.

Harris died in British Columbia, Canada, in August, 2017, while filming an action scene for the Marvel superhero movie. A US resident, Harris had no experience as a stunt rider in the movie business; previously, she’d competed in lower-level AMA-sanctioned roadracing series. Harris got the job after another rider hired was unable to perform the stunts needed.

Harris was riding without a helmet when she crashed. When WorkSafe BC (the province’s workplace safety authorities) investigated the crash, this was cause for much concern. In its findings, WorkSafe BC found the production company had violated five points of the Workers Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, including two counts related to the lack of safety headgear.
