It didn’t take a rocket scientist to know that KTM had other plans for its Duke 890’s engine.  The upcoming Husqvarna Norden 901 will likely feature a similar mill when it arrives.  But it turns out that we don’t have to wait for the Norden 901.  KTM has already upped its ante with the new KTM 890 Adventure R and 890 Adventure R Rally.

KTM 890 Adventure R and Adventure R Rally engine

The 890 Adventure R and R Rally’s engine is a fettled version of the Duke 890’s 889cc powerplant.  It has been tuned for off-road considerations but still puts out a claimed 105 hp and 73 lb-ft of torque.  That’s about a 10% increase in horsepower and a 9 lb-ft increase of torque at only 6500 rpm.

You may be wondering how the engine gains in torque at low rpm.  KTM says that the new engine has a 10% increase in rotating mass thanks to a heavier crankshaft.  The Austrian company says that it is a benefit and improves the bike’s torque delivery and rideability, especially at lower revs.  Although the engine is more powerful and has more torque, it meets Euro 5 emission standards.

KTM 890 Adventure R Rally

The 2021 KTM 890 Adventure R Rally looks quite similar to its 790 Adventure R predecessor.

To get the power to the ground efficiently, KTM also updated the gearbox with a more durable clutch and an updated quickshifter (optional on the 890 Adventure R).  Lastly, KTM says it has updated the bike’s electronics and improved its ABS and traction control.

790 to 890 differences

The bikes look very similar to the current 790 Adventures.  But there are significant changes beneath the machine’s bodywork.  Both models are equipped with an aluminum steering stem in place of the 790 Adventure’s steel one to reduce weight.  The bike’s subframe is also lighter.

KTM says that the 890 Adventure R’s WP XPLOR front and rear suspension receive updated suspension settings.  However, the 890 Adventure R Rally gets an upgrade with WP XPLOR Pro components at both ends.

The Rally also gets an Akropovic exhaust that’s a claimed 35% lighter than stock, a 910 mm tall, flat seat, anodized wheel rims, and tubed tires, a “Rally” mode, the improved quickshifter as standard, larger rally footpegs, carbon tank protectors, and a pair of clear wind deflectors at the bike’s front.

Pricing and availability

The 890 Adventure R will be available at dealers.  However, the 890 Adventure R Rally is a limited edition machine.  Only 700 examples of the more beastly middleweight adventure bike will be produced worldwide, with only 200 destined for the US market.

KTM will release online reservations for the US allotment of the 890 Adventure R Rally November 2nd at  10:30 PST.  To help you, there’s a countdown timer on KTM’s USA website for the opening of pre-orders.  But you’d better be ready when the window opens because, according to Bennetts, just a few minutes after the bike’s reveal, there were fewer than 400 of the 500 “rest of the world” allotment remaining.

Prices for both machines are still TBA.
