Want to party with the people behind Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR)?  BDR is having a 10-year anniversary celebration on October 22, but like so many other fun things, this event has to run online.

When Backcountry Discovery Routes was founded in 2010, the goal was to publish one new route every year. A decade later, there are now 10 BDRs to choose from, so they’ve managed to get what they wanted. Although the first BDRs were mostly based in the western US, the organization has shifted its focus eastward in recent years. The latest route, the New England Backcountry Discovery Route (NEBDR), runs through the northeast US and terminates at the Maine-Quebec border. In a normal year, the NEBDR would have been filled with riders exploring the new territory this summer.

This hasn’t been a normal year, though, and BDR’s original plans for an in-person party had to be nuked. Originally, BDR had an Appalachian Fundraiser Ride & 10 Year Anniversary Party planned, but thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, that plan was cancelled. Now, we’re getting a live video broadcast through the Backcountry Discovery Routes YouTube channel instead. It runs 5-7 PM PST (8-10 PM EST) on Thursday, October 22. Of course, there’s no fee to tune in.

Log on, and you’ll see live appearances from the BDR’s founders, board members and other insiders. They’ll share stories from the BDR expeditions that charted out the routes, as well as blooper reel footage that was cut from the route release films. They’re going to show previews of BDR – A 10 Year Retrospective, the organization’s 2021 release, and of course will talk about all the people who’ve helped make this work out. And, there’ll be thoughts on the future for BDR. Tune in on the 22nd to see the show!
