BMW will bring its R NineT line forward into 2021 with updated engine, suspension and electronics, but not every sub-model will make the cut.

For 2021, we get the standard R NineT, the “base model” R NineT Pure, the R NineT Scrambler and the R NineT Urban GS. The Racer version, with clip-on handlebars, wasn’t on the list BMW announced today, although we wouldn’t count it out from returning down the road.

The 2021 R NineT models still have an air/oil-cooled flat twin, with 1170cc capacity. Now, they’re Euro5-compliant, with new cylinder heads and some internal trickery to bring them into compliance with the latest European emissions standards. They make 109 horsepower, which is down about one horsepower from the previous models. However, they reach peak hp quicker now, at 7,250 rpm instead of 7,750 rpm, and BMW says the 4,000-6,000 rpm range has more power now (which is just what every manufacturer is preaching these days, more mid-range power). Rain and Road riding modes are standard.

BMW upgraded the electronics package to include leaning ABS as standard equipment, as well as a new Dynamic Brake Control feature that closes the throttle under heavy braking. That’s obviously a feature of the (also new) ride-by-wire throttle.

The front suspension is more-or-less the same, but BMW did some tinkering with the rear shock’s internals, and now there’s a handy remote preload adjuster knob. Some of the bike’s trim gets updated for 2020 (new indicators, new speedo, new USB charger). But overall these machines are pretty much the same as before.

At this point, BMW’s US site doesn’t have pricing or availability listed for any of the R NineT machines, but that’s sure to come soon, so keep an eye out for that.
