Serial 1 Is Harley’s Electric Bicycle Company
Harley-Davidson is taking another step towards electric two-wheelers. However, Harley isn’t planning to build electric motorcycles. This time, it’s electric bicycles. And they are spinning out a brand new company to build them. The new company’s name is Serial 1. The name is a play on “Serial Number One,” the first development platform on which its modern-day motorcycles are built.
The Serial 1 electric bicycle takes many of its design cues from the first internal combustion engine Harley-Davidson.
Serial 1 pays homage to the first Harley
It doesn’t take much to see the similarity between the Serial 1 electric bicycle and Harley-Davidson’s first internal combustion-engined motorcycle. And, the Serial 1 takes many of its design features from that machine. With its white tires, blacked-out wheels and frame, chrome hardware, and even a brown oiled leather seat, the electric bicycle smacks you in the face with its “modern” retro looks.
Harley is the new company’s parent.
In a press release, Harley-Davidson’s Serial 1 Brand Director Aaron Frank had this to say about the new electric bicycle:
“When Harley-Davidson first put power to two wheels in 1903, it changed how the world moved, forever. Inspired by the entrepreneurial vision of Harley-Davidson’s founders, we hope to once again change how cyclists and the cycling-curious move around their world with a Serial 1 eBicycle.”
On its website, the company says this about the e-bike:
“Inspired by the entrepreneurial vision of Harley-Davidson’s founders—and the revolutionary impact of their oldest-known motorcycle, affectionately referred to as “Serial Number One—Serial 1 Cycles was created for the sole purpose of delivering innovative eBicycles that make every ride an adventure.”
“Combining Harley-Davidson’s world-class product development capability with the agility of a start-up brand, Serial 1 Cycles offers premium eBicycles guided by intelligent, human-centered design and crafted using the most advanced bicycle technology available, to create the easiest and most intuitive way to experience the fun, freedom and instant adventure of riding a pedal-assist electric bicycle.”
Not much information
Unfortunately, Harley has released little else about the Serial 1 or the company that will build them. For now, all we get is teaser shots of the bike from various vantage points. There are no details about its range, weight, or pricing.
The headstock badge seems electrically illuminated.
But as the newest member of the e-bike family emerging from a company that says it builds “premium” products, you can expect that it won’t be cheap.
Hopefully, we’ll get more information in a few weeks. A countdown timer on the company’s webpage shows that more info is coming on November 16, 2020.
