Spy Shots – KTM Powers CFMOTO’s 800MT
It’s widely known that Chinese manufacturer CFMoto has a deal with KTM. The deal allows CFMoto to use KTM engine technology. It already has a license to use KTM’s LC-8 v-twin engine. And it now seems that the company has access to the engine used in KTM’s 790 Adventure to use in their new adventure machine, the 800MT.
So it’s not surprising that more spy shots have emerged showing CFMoto’s 800MT adventure bike equipped with what looks to be KTM’s 790 Adventure engine. But it’s the bike’s production-ready look that is the most interesting part. The bike’s previous state looked somewhat less finished, but the latest pics mean that CFMoto may be very close to production readiness. Indian outlet Zigwheels says the bike may make an appearance in early 2021.
The new adventure machine takes its styling cues from several different other manufacturers. The 800MT visually has elements from the Triumph Tiger and the Ducati Multistrada. But there’s no mistaking the engine cradled in the bike’s frame. A closeup spy photo clearly shows the engine, complete with marking that uses KTM’s logo with some additional letters. It looks like it might read KTMRZR.
One thing you don’t see on the 800MT is the KTM 790’s low fuel tank. The Chinese machine looks to use a fuel tank placed in the usual position atop the bike’s frame.
Zigwheels also says that the new machine will have a large TFT instrument cluster that has features like smartphone integration with navigation assist. The seat also looks significantly lower than the KTM 790 Adventure’s perch. That should make the bike “available” to shorter riders. There’s also a decent-sized windshield, LED lighting, and tall relatively flat handlebars.
Whether the bike will make it to the US is unclear. Time will tell.
