Yamaha’s just sent word its MT-09 SP naked bike will come to the US and Canada for the 2021 model year.

Most riders are fairly familiar with the MT-09 formula: A fun three-cylinder engine in a naked bike package with good handling. Yamaha just updated the engine, aluminum frame and electronics for 2021 (read about that here). But, other markets have also gotten an SP version for a while now, with upgraded parts for a more sporty ride.

Now, North America also gets the MT-09 SP, for 2021. Yamaha’s press release says it comes with a fully-adjustable Kayaba fork, as well as an Ohlins rear shock (also fully-adjustable, with remote preload adjustment). The stock MT-09 saw suspension upgrades for 2021, but this should be even better.

The base model MT-09 also comes with a good electronics package for 2021, including a six-axis IMU. Yamaha added a cruise control feature for the SP model, with no other electro-trickery mentioned in the press release.

What the press release does talk about, is the SP’s trick finish, with much mention of “R1M-influenced multi-toned paint scheme and seamless water-transfer graphics” and the “specially-buffed clear coat surface” on the swingarm. Yamaha also included anodized handlebars, smoke-clear reservoirs, a double-stich seat, and made sure the Ohlins shock had a flashy yellow spring. Customers will no doubt like the look of all that.

In the US, the MSRP for the special-edition bike is $10,999, a $1,600 premium over the base model. In Canada, the SP sells for $13,999, a $3,200 increase over the base model—that may prove a tougher sell.
