Kawasaki is recalling certain H2 and ZX-10 models due to a problem with the bike’s ECU.  The root of the problem is some faulty programming.  The bike’s electronic control unit does not have the capability to suppress high RPM during transmission gear “mismanagement”.  In other words, during a missed shift.

The recall says if the bike’s transmission gears are not properly engaged while shifting into 4th or 5th gear, they may fracture when re-engaged.  If the gears fracture, they could jam and cause the engine to lock up which could result in loss of control and an increased risk of a crash.

Ninja H2 and ZX-10 models affected

The recalled machines were produced between November 27, 2017, and December 4, 2019.  Specifically, the following models may be affected:

MAKE MODEL YEAR
KAWASAKI NINJA H2 SX / NINJA H2 SXSE / , NINJA H2 SXSE+ 2018-2020
KAWASAKI ZX1002A 2018-2020
KAWASAKI ZX1002B 2018-2020
KAWASAKI ZX1002D 2019-2020

A total of 799 motorcycles are subject to this recall.

Kawasaki will notify owners of the affected models and dealers will reprogram the ECU software free of charge.  The recall has already begun.

For additional information, owners may contact Kawasaki Motor Corp, USA customer service at 1-866-802-9381, and cite KMC’s recall number of MC20-10. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), and cite the NHTSA campaign 20V676000.  Or they can review the recall documents themselves at www.safercar.gov.
