Want to help preserve offroad riding opportunities? Also, do you want a new motorcycle? Lucky you—if you’re in the US, you have a chance to do both, thanks to the Trail Preservation Alliance. Right now, the Trail Preservation Alliance (TPA) is doing a fundraiser to bring in cash for future endeavours; if you donate to the cause, you can also enter to win a new KTM 690 Enduro. It’s not just any 690; several companies have gotten together to build up this Katoom into a very adventure-worthy enduro.

What does the Trail Preservation Alliance do?

The TPA works to promote trail access for dirt bikes and other powersports vehicles. As per the group’s website: “The Trails Preservation Alliance (TPA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with its principal goal focused on preserving the sport of motorized single-track trail riding. The TPA regularly supports all forms of Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) recreation.” It’s active in the Colorado, and partners with the Colorado Off Highway Vehicle Coalition on preserving access to singletrack, although it partners with national organizations when needed. There’s a list of some of the TPA’s projects here; with large organizations opposing trailriders’ access to singletrack in Colorado’s national forests, the TPA has tough battles ahead, but it has been seeing positive results.

The Alliance works out its advocacy through a few different channels. The TPA deals with federal organizations (the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management) to make sure the feds allow “a fair and equitable percentage of access to trail riding on public lands.” The TPA also works at educating offroaders on trail etiquette, and helps establish and operate localized offroad motorcycle clubs.

Volunteer work, but still a need for funds

The TPA keeps its overhead low by relying on volunteers to get the work done. Nevertheless, it does need money to keep afloat; at times it needs to hire lawyers, engineers, biologists and other scientists or specialists to help achieve its goals. To raise money, the Alliance is totally donation-driven. That’s why fundraisers like its current donation drive are so important—free labour only gets you so far.

The prize

The TPA announced its fundraising drive in the fall of 2020, setting up a sweepstakes-style draw. Buy a ticket, and you’ll be funding the Alliance’s efforts, and you’ll also be entered for a chance to win a tricked-out 2020 KTM 690 Enduro.

If the 690 Enduro was the only prize, it’d be a sweet machine to win, as KTM’s latest big-bore thumper is a great bike on its own, However, this machine had a lot of upgrading beyond its stock configuration. Rocky Mountain ATV/MC donated a lot of the parts and did a lot of the work, but other companies also pitched in.
