Honda’s announced updates to the Euro-market 2022 Africa Twin CRF1100L, but it seems these changes are mostly refinements of the existing formula.

The engine appears to mostly be the same as the model that debuted for 2020. The liquid-cooled parallel twin is still rated for about 100 horsepower at the crank, so it sounds as if the top end is basically unchanged.

The bottom end on dual clutch transmission-equipped models sees a minor revision. The DCT bikes now have refinements to first gear and second gear, which are supposed to reduce the chance of stalling when taking off.

Such improvements seem to be becoming increasingly prevalent on motorcycles, as almost every OEM now brags about some sort of anti-stall design for low-speed maneuvering. It’s also very common to see mid-model updates on DCTs, as Honda often refines the system after one or two years of production and customer feedback.

It seems the gearboxes are unchanged on the standard six-speed Africa Twin models for 2022. However, all Africa Twin CRF1100L machines get another update, no matter which transmission they run. Previously, the Adventure Sports model came with an aluminum rack as standard equipment, while buyers of the standard bike had to pay extra, as it was an optional upgrade. Going forward, that rack is now standard equipment on all Africa Twin machines, no matter which series they’re in.

The Adventure Sports model gets its own specific update for 2022: A five-way adjustable windscreen, that’s 4.4 inches shorter than the previous model. The shorter windscreen should be a bit safer on this offroad-oriented version of the bike.

Of course, Honda will also offer several new paint options, some of which will presumably be different in our market. Speaking of which: Presumably, North American machines will also see the same general updates. Honda hasn’t announced the Africa Twin lineup for Canada or the US yet, but it’s surely just a matter of time.
