Indian Motorcycle (Indian) is issuing a recall for certain 2020 Indian Scout Bobber Sixty motorcycles.  The problem stems from an engine control unit (ECU) update.  In some motorcycles, the update may cause the motorcycle’s brake lights to become inoperative.

The affected units received an ECU reflash between February 26, 2020, and August 16, 2021.  If your bike did not receive an ECU reflash during that period, your Motorcycle is not part of the recall population.  However, if your bike did receive a reflash of its ECU during this period, there is a potential for your brake lights to fail.

Indian says the root cause of the failure is that memory object values were loaded incorrectly in a service tool used by dealers.  Thereafter, the service tool introduced software errors during the ECU reflash.  These incorrect memory values could result in the loss of the bike’s brake light functionality.

To correct the problem, Indian will contact potentially affected customers.  The customers will receive notice about the potential loss of brake light functionality.  Indian will then ask owners to check their motorcycles for the proper operation of its taillights.   If there is a problem, Indian will ask consumers to self-report using an electronic form.  The form will confirm to Indian that the customer’s rear brake lights are not functioning.

Do not ride/paid transportation

Indian will then instruct customers not to ride their motorcycles until a repair is completed.  Interestingly, Indian says that they will reimburse the customers/dealers for transporting the motorcycle to the dealer for repair.  For affected motorcycles, dealers will reflash the bike’s ECU at no cost.
