Yamaha is recalling certain 2020 and 2021 XVS95C (Bolt model) motorcycles.  According to Yamaha’s recall notice, the affected motorcycles may have engine cases that could leak oil onto the rear tire.

Yamaha’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says 233 motorcycles may have this issue.

In its report, Yamaha says:

Due to irregularities in casting temperatures caused by the improper application of a mold-release agent during manufacturing of affected  units, there is a possibility that the engine cases may be porous near a  bolt location at the bottom.

Describing the safety risk, Yamaha states:

Oil could leak out onto the rear tire, increasing the risk of loss of control and a crash with injury or death.

The motorcycles affected by this recall are as follows:

Specifically, affected motorcycles must have the engine crankcase inspected for porosity and engine oil leak.  There will be no charge for the inspection or, if necessary, subsequent repair.

Yamaha should have already notified dealers and owners of this recall.  However, if your motorcycle is in the affected population, you should take your bike to a dealer for inspection.

Yamaha Motorcycle’s repair plan:

Yamaha dealers will inspect the engine case for leaking oil.  If the leak is the result of the engine case’s porosity, Yamaha will replace the engine free of charge.

Should owners have any questions, they may contact Yamaha customer service at 1-800-962-7926 and cite Yamaha’s recall number 990150.  Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), quoting NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V806000, or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
