BDR and AMA Announce Partnership

Backcountry Discovery Routes has announced a partnership with the American Motorcyclist Association in an effort to entice more adventure riders into joining the AMA.
AMA’s long-standing tagline is “Rights, Riding, Racing.” While we’re certainly not racing down BDR’s excellent routes, AMA’s advocacy and riding support have already extended to adventure riders. Plus, who’s to say that some of us aren’t racing in AMA-sanctioned events, too? While there’s nothing ADV-specific in AMA’s mission, it makes sense for them to actively reach out to this growing part of the motorcycling population. This isn’t the first time AMA has recognized the prominent role BDR plays in our community. Last year they named BDR Board President Tim James as the AMA Motorcyclist of the Year.
“I joined over 20 years ago and now I’m an AMA Charter Life Member. Joining the AMA is one of the best ways ADV riders can help protect the future of motorcycling as we know it. They fight for our rights and bring riders together through education, advocacy, and events. I’m excited that BDR is teaming up with the AMA and looking forward to finding more ways to work together for the motorcycle community.”

Using a special link, people joining AMA for the first time may request a unique BDR affinity membership card rather than the standard AMA card. They will also receive a free neck gaiter featuring BDR and AMA logos. I was unable to find an option for existing AMA members to get either of these.
It is unclear what will become of this partnership beyond its symbolic nature. Tim James is certainly worthy of AMA’s award, and AMA Chairman of the Board Russ Ehnes has been helping to scout and refine the upcoming Montana BDR, so the two organizations have already been working together informally. Time will tell if this will mean greater advocacy for ADV-specific interests or more AMA membership benefits geared specifically toward ADVers.
