Liberty Media, the current owner of the MotoGP World Championship, Formula 1 Racing, and, interestingly, the Atlanta Braves, is on the lookout for a new head honcho for the MotoGP World Championship Series. According to a story in the Italian publication Moto Sprint, Moto America COO Chuck Aksland is said to be being considered to lead the world-level motorcycle racing series into the future, replacing current CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta. Prior to becoming the COO of MotoAmerica, Aksland held other high-level motorcycle racing positions, including managing Kenny Roberts’ KR3 team, which fielded the three-cylinder Modenas KR3 500cc MotoGP machine.

But Aksland apparently is not the only high-profile person being considered. Moto Sprint says other names include Aprilia’s MotoGP Sports Director Massimo Rivola, Formula 1’s current CEO Stefano Domenicali, Trackhouse Racing’s Motosport Manager Davide Brivio, and current Ducati Off Road General Manager Paulo Ciabatti. Each of these rumored candidates would be well-equipped for the MotoGP CEO position if selected by Liberty Media.

If Aksland is to take the MotoGP top spot, it will likely take a very serious offer from Liberty Media to get him to make the move to MotoGP. Aksland is one of the original members of the KRAVE Group, a partnership led by three-time 500cc World Champion, two-time AMA Superbike Champion, and AMA Hall of Famer Wayne Rainey. Together with Chief Marketing Officer Terry Karges and Chief Financial Officer Richard Varner, the group has pretty much unilaterally rescued and resurrected motorcycle road racing in the USA.

So, who will head MotoGP into the future? If Chuck Aksland is chosen and decides to take the position, he certainly has the credentials to do so.
