BMW’s Boxer Cup returns for a second season of European racing

Recommended Posts

BMW says its Boxer Cup is returning for 2020, with seven race weekends in Europe for 14 races in total this year.

The Boxer Cup is a spec series, run in conjunction with aftermarket suspension provider Wilbers. The series uses identical BMW R nine T Racer machines, but with some updates to improve on-track performance. According to the presser, the bikes have “optimised fork and a strut by Wilbers, carbon fibre cylinder head covers, engine spoiler and rear end by Ilmberger, titanium manifolds with mufflers by BOS, quick-release brake couplings by Stäubli, windshield and frame sliders by Wunderlich, BMW Motorrad ABS with racing software, handlebars and footrest systems and the option of a reverse shift pattern by Gilles Tooling, as well as Dunlop slicks and rain tyres. A new BoxerCup partner is silencer manufacturer BOS, who is fitting every racing Boxer with powerful-sounding silencers.” That’s a fairly extensive list of parts, but probably necessary if you want to take these modern-day cafe racer replicas around a circuit at high speed, with a nasty off, or grinding all sorts of low-hanging parts to bits (and then having your nasty off).

Last year’s racing ran alongside the German IDM superbike championship, with Chris “Fifty“ Hoefer prevailing, and other well-known superbike racers participating. This year, there’ll be German, Swiss, Belgian and American riders. We haven’t seen an official list of entrants yet, but there’s plenty of time before the first race (May 22-24 at Austria’s Red Bull Ring). The BMW press release says race organizers are still accepting entries, and that Wilbers is offering a complete race bike package for sale: the R nine T, plus a kit that includes a host of go-fast bits. Pricing appears to start at €19,990.

If you’re interested, you can find quite a bit more information at the race series website, found here. You’ll need to decipher it, either with a translator or through the wonders of Google, as it’s all in German.
