Royal Enfield is going racing.  The India based manufacturer is making it official and publically announcing it will enter the American Flat Track (AFT) series.  The company will enter its first AFT race on August 28th and 29th with a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 based machine.

American Flat Track series

Their new entry will race in the series’ Production Twins class.  Royal Enfield’s Slide School instructor Johnny Lewis will be piloting the new machine against established competitors from Harley-Davidson and Indian.

In the company’s press release, Lewis said:

“The Royal Enfield FT concept has already shown promise so far.  We’re already seeing great results from the motorcycle. The team at Harris Performance and Royal Enfield have done a great job with the chassis, and we’ve already begun working through small adjustments based on my feedback. With the way the schedule is shaping out with small tracks, we could surprise many people.”

Royal Enfield’s entry into American Flat Track racing does not seem like a one-off publicity stunt.  They have been showing their commitment to flat track for quite some time now.

Moto Anatomy Slide School

In conjunction with Johnny Lewis’ Moto Anatomy, they have established a flat track training school called the Slide School.  Classes give participants 3.5 hours of instruction in flat track technique.

According to the MotoAnatomy website, the program provides riders “with the knowledge that takes riders a lifetime to figure out on their own, the slide is an art and once experienced its hard to get away from the feeling.”

Lewis’ classes are for beginner to intermediate flat track riders ages 14+.  Students will ride specially adapted Royal Enfield Himalayan FT411 models.  The cost of the Slide School class is $250.

Schedule

If you are interested in the Slide School, Moto Anatomy will offer classes at Lewis’ facility in Central Florida (near Orlando) as well as selected AFT rounds on the following schedule:

August 8th New London, Ohio Lupica Training Facility ( Private facility outside Cleveland)

September 13th Pennsylvania ( Outside Williams Grove Pennsylvania) TBA

October 6th Travelers Rest, South Carolina Travelers Rest Speedway
