Fabrizio Pirovano Tribute R1 Auctioned In Support of Cancer Charity

Recommended Posts

Yamaha Motor Europe is auctioning off a Fabrizio Pirovano tribute R1 in support of a cancer charity. The replica livery celebrates the World Superbike racer’s final victory in the class at Estoril in 1993. Pirovano succumbed to cancer in 2016.

The FIM World Superbike Championship returned to Estoril, Portugal, in 2020 for the first time since that race weekend in 1993, with Yamaha fittingly taking 1-2-3 in the Super Pole race, Toprak Razgatlioglu (PATA YAMAHA WorldSBK Official Team) emerging victorious. Alessandro Gramigni, 1992 125GP World Champion and close friend of Pirovano, took a parade lap with the Pirovano replica R1 before the second race, won by Chaz Davies (ARUBA.IT Racing – Ducati).

Built by Yamaha Motor Europe, the 2020 Yamaha R1 will be delivered to the lucky auction winner in their choice of track-ready trim, or street legal configuration with the Akrapovič race exhaust and the Pirelli slick shod wheels removed and delivered separately. The colours mimic the YZF750SP race bike that Pirovano raced in 1993, the SP being a homologation special available in Canada and Europe featuring flat-slide carbs, hotter cams, adjustable Öhlins suspension, and close ratio transmission.

Fabrizio Pirovano entered the World Superbike Championship in its inaugural year, 1988, winning the French round at Le Mans, and finishing second in the overall behind American Fred Merkel. Between ’88 and ’93, Pirovano would win 10 World Superbike races with Yamaha, before moving to Ducati for ’94 and ’95.

Pirovano would move to the Supersport World Championship with Ducati in 1997, then Suzuki from 1998 to 2001, winning it in 1998.

Pirovano died at age 56 on June 12, 2016, and was given a final lap at Monza, his favourite circuit, in a motorcycle sidecar hearse. The “Piro” replica R1 is currently up for auction on eBay until November 1.
