Harley-Davidson Recalls Certain LiveWire Motorcycles

Recommended Posts

Harley-Davidson is recalling about 1,000 LiveWire electric motorcycles.  The recall reportedly stems from a software problem with the bike’s onboard charging system (OBC).

LiveWire unexpected loss of propulsion

Harley says the above OBC software problem may cause an unexpected loss of propulsion of the bike while it is in motion.  In addition, riders may not be able to re-start or keep the motorcycle re-started.  All of these factors may increase the risk of a crash.

In its report of the issue to the National Highways Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Harley provided the following information:

The software in the On-Board Charging (OBC) System may initiate a shutdown
of the electric vehicle powertrain, without providing reasonable indication to the rider that a shutdown sequence has been initiated.  In some cases, the vehicle may not be able to be restarted or, if restarted, may shortly thereafter shut down again.

In some cases, indicator lamps may illuminate on the instrumentation prior to loss of propulsion.  The indicator lamps that may come on include: the Traction Control (TC) lamp, the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) lamp, and the Failure Indicator Lamp (FIL).  However, there could also be instances where there is no indication of a failure.

Harley-Davidson is recalling approximately 1,000 LiveWire motorcycles.

To remedy the problem, Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will update the OBC software free of charge.  This recall has already begun.
