2021 KTM 690 Enduro R updates

It’s hard to believe it’s already been two years since we announced the last major updates to the KTM 690 Enduro R for the 2019 model year. The 690R has always been a slim, maneuverable machine with a capable WP suspension that allows it to blast down some of the toughest trails. Yet with its advanced tech and powerful 74 horsepower engine, it’s ready to go the distance loaded up for adventure.

The Austrian brand continues to find new ways to keep their big enduro fresh for 2021. The last refresh saw improvements in ergonomics, electronics and handling. Now for 2021, while America will mainly see new livery, KTM is unveiling several changes for the European model.

“The LC4 has been a powerful component of the KTM 690 ENDURO R and KTM 690 SMC R but we’ve still been able to harness that asset and continue to develop both motorcycles to be a special part of our KTM portfolio. We’ve found ways to give riders a more exciting and upgraded package for 2021 that keep the bikes as references in their segment.” — Joachim Sauer, KTM Product Manager

With the aim of enhanced practicality, KTM has added improved ride mode functionality through the handlebar switch: STREET mode enables two channels of ABS both on the front and rear of the bike. The OFFROAD setting disengages rear wheel ABS for that important rear braking feel on dirt. The ABS itself benefits from a new modulator unit to better regulate the force and application of the braking power required, which also means it can be activated ‘on the fly’ without the need for a ‘dongle.’ Although it’s worth noting that there are differences between the European and US models for 2021. We are told by KTM North America that here in the U.S. we will not receive the updates to the ABS system.

Another enhancement coming down the pipe is a new display with an integrated ABS ‘button’ to provide a rapid way to switch off the rider aid during off-road riding. The same display now shows indicators for RPM and gear selection. No details about the new dash were included in the US press release but it is mentioned on KTM’s U.S. website.

When it comes to the aesthetic of the motorcycle, KTM has put together a new graphics package for 2021, with styling based on the EXC family for an aggressive look. The orange-gray color revision is a departure for the typical orange-black color scheme that has been used over the last 12 years, and is an eye-catching addition.

Across the pond in Europe, the 690 Enduro R will also receive a new catalytic converter to meet Euro5 emission standards and the bike can be clicked into a restricted-power mode (49 horsepower)  to comply with A2 license requirements. Authorized European KTM dealers are expected to begin receiving the new model starting in January of 2021, while availability here in the U.S. starts this December.
