Ducati updates its semi-sensible SuperSport series

Ducati’s updating its SuperSport 950 series for 2021, with a visual makeover and some new electronics. The engine gets a slight overhaul, too.

However, Ducati’s not re-inventing the formula here. The SuperSport 950 still has basically the same 937cc Testastretta engine as before, with the same output (110 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, 69 pound-feet of torque at 6,500 rpm). It’s just Euro5-friendly now, and the standard 950 engine gets the quickshifter as standard (before, it was only standard for the S model). It looks like the steel trellis frame is the same as well, and the standard SuperSport and up-spec’d SuperSport S both have the same front and rear suspenders as the current model (the S model appears to have the same Ohlins fork and shock). Brakes, too, seem unchanged, with the same Brembo calipers as before. Dry weight is 184 kg, basically the same as before.

The big changes are elsewhere, mostly in the electronics. The SuperSport 950 S has a six-axis IMU now, sourced from Bosch. This governs the bike’s electronics package, allowing for refined control of the bike’s cornering ABS, traction control, wheelie control, and other electronic systems. It’s even tied into the quickshifter, to enhance cornering stability.

The SuperSport series also gets a 4.3-inch TFT screen for 2021; previous models had an LCD dash, which just won’t do for a premium product in this era. Riders can interface with their bike’s electronics via the TFT screen, and it also connects to mobile devices and helmet headsets via Bluetooth, allowing for control of infotainment features.

The fairing’s updated for 2021 as well, with a new seat and handlebars that should make for a more comfortable riding triangle.

The SuperSport 950 and SuperSport 950 S should be in North America for the 2021 selling season. The SuperSport 950 will sell for $13,495 in the US, with the S model starting at $15,795 ($16,195 if you want white paint, not red). In Canada, pricing starts at $15,394 for the standard 950, with the SuperSport 950 S selling for $17,894, and $19,094 if you want it in white.
