It looks like Triumph is working on a new sport touring model to be called the Tiger 850 Sport.  The news comes as a result of Triumph’s U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) filing.  In the filing, the EPA certified the Tiger 850 Sport along with different Tiger 900 variants.

For the EPA to do so, it means that the Tiger 850 Sport will likely use the same 888cc triple as found in the Tiger 900.  Per the emissions data in the filing, the engine puts out a claimed 94hp at 8,750 rpm and 64 lb-ft of torque at 7,250 rpm.  That’s the same as the Tiger 900 models.  So the only change is the addition of the Tiger Sport name.

The Triumph Tiger 850 will likely use the same engine found in the Tiger 900.

It’s been a while since Triumph offered a Tiger Sport in the US.  Back in 2012, Triumph offered a Tiger 1050 SE.   Other parts of the world received an updated Tiger Sport Model in 2016 with a 1050cc triple engine.

NewsBytes speculation

If the Tiger 850 actually reaches US shores, NewsBytes says that the new machine could be an affordable road-focused two-wheeler positioned below the Tiger 900 GT.  They go on to say that it will likely have a tubular steel frame, a semi-faired look, a tall windshield, upswept exhaust, and a sloping fuel tank.  The machine may also sport all LED lighting, a digital instrument console, and cast alloy wheels with road-biased tires.

A “smaller,” more sport touring oriented version of the Tiger 900 may be coming to the US.

As a sport-tourer, NewsBytes says that the bike will also feature dual-channel ABS with disc brakes on both ends.  Lastly, the suspension is said to be comprised of an inverted fork with a preload adjustable shock at the rear.  They don’t provide any component manufacturers, however.

Competition for the Tiger 850 Sport would likely include the Yamaha Tracer 900, BMW F900XR, and the Ducati Multistrada 950.  There’s no word on pricing, but it’s a fair bet that the bike will be priced at or below the above competition.
