MotoCAP has released safety ratings for fifteen new pairs of motorcycle riding gloves, with the Alpinestars SP Air Glove taking top marks in the test.

Previously, MotoCAP only had four pairs of gloves listed on its site, with the Alpinestars GP Plus R2 gloves earning top marks.

Those gloves are still MotoCAP’s highest-rated gloves, but out of the new crop, the SP Air gloves also earn very high marks, with four out of five stars for safety. You can see the whole list of newly-tested gloves here; there’s am emphasis on street riding, but some of them would work for all-round ADV usage.

If you’re unfamiliar with MotoCAP, that’s no surprise. It’s not an actual government sanctioning body; it’s a relatively new project in Australia, partnering a long list of government bodies and transporation-focused organizations (Transport for NSW, State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA), VicRoads, Transport Accident Commission (TAC), Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV), Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC), Lifetime Support Authority (LSA), the Department for Infrastructure and Transport, Western Australian Police: Road Safety Commission, Department of State Growth, Insurance Australia Group (IAG), Australian Motorcycle Council and Accident Compensation Corporation in New Zealand).

MotoCAP tests motorcycle gear for both safety and comfort, with help from the Deakin University Institute for Frontier Materials (ADVrider’s original write-up explaining the project is here). Because MotoCAP relies on donated gear for testing, it’s limited in what it can examine (COVID-19 probably hasn’t made it any easier either). However, it’s slowly building up a database of tested gear, with more equipment added every few months.
