More than a year after launching the new CRF1100L, Honda has finally announced that Android Auto will be integrated with the current-model Africa Twin (2020 and newer). The Japanese manufacturer had introduced the update to Gold Wing models last summer and promised to bring the same capability to other models at some point in the future. After months of no word from Honda, hundreds of Africa Twin customers signed a petition asking Big Red for the update. Whether this prompted a speedier delivery of the update or not, it does seem there is high demand for the feature.

The CRF1100L already included Apple CarPlay integration as part of its advanced electronics package. Now customers with Android smartphones will have access to similar technology features that Apple users have enjoyed. With the Android Auto app, they can now use application services including listening to music, hands-free phone calls and messaging, at no additional cost. To utilize Android Auto with Africa Twin models, a Bluetooth headset is also required (sold separately).

Honda CRF1100L gets Android Auto integration

Android Auto features a simplified interface, and easy-to-use voice commands designed to minimize distraction so riders can stay focused on the road. With Google Assistant on Android Auto, riders can stay connected, keeping their eyes on the road and their hands on the handlebar, while using voice commands to control functionality. You can find routes, play your favorite songs and even check the weather. Get real-time alerts with Google Maps and Waze. Even ask Google Assistant to find gas along the way. You can see it all on your dashboard display, helping you know more about what’s nearby. Just say “Hey Google” to get started.

Africa Twin owners who would like to add Android Auto integration should visit Honda’s website, where detailed instructions will be provided for downloading the software to a USB drive and uploading it to their motorcycle. A passenger volume-control function will also be included in the software update.
