Triumph presents Rocket 3 R Black, Rocket 3 GT Triple Black

Triumph’s big into special-edition machines these days, and for 2021, we’re getting limited-production versions of the Rocket 3 R and the Rocket 3 GT.

The new machines will be called the Rocket 3 R Black, and the Rocket 3 GT Triple Black. The names sum these models up: They’re basically the same as the standard Rocket 3 models, but with a lot of black paint added.

Both machines get black trim everywhere. The engine, the exhaust, the hand and foot controls, the mirrors—almost everything is black. Triumph even saw fit to black-out the fender mounts and other small bits.

Triumph also says each model will be produced in a limited run of 1,000 machines worldwide. The bikes will not be individually numbered, as Triumph has done with previous special-edition machines. Instead, owners will get a certificate that indicates the machine is part of the limited production run.

Remember that the Rocket 3 R and GT models are mostly the same, with handlebars and footpegs changing the seating position slightly; the GT is a bit more of a luxury machine, and the R is more of a muscle bike.

Chrome don’t get ya home, the saying goes, and black won’t improve your times at the track. Both blacked-out versions of the Rocket 3 platform don’t see any performance gains. They’re both running the stock 2,500cc liquid-cooled transverse triple, making 65 horsepower at 4,000 rpm, and 163 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. That’s nothing to sneeze at, and no doubt Triumph’s customers will find the torque curve sufficient for all street-legal applications.

Both the Rocket 3 R Black and the Rocket 3 GT Triple Black also get the same standard electronics package as the rest of the Rocket 3 series. Triumph included leaning-sensitive ABS and traction control on the latest-generation Rocket 3 models, as well as hill-hold control, cruise control, and even a GoPro control system, managed through the TFT screen.

At this point, we haven’t seen North American pricing or availability for the new blacked-out Triumph models, but no doubt they’ll have it up soon on the Triumph website.
