Looking for an excuse to get out for an early-season ride? If you’re in New England, you can zip over to Newport, Rhode Island, to check out the Audrain Automobile Museum’s new motorcycle exhibit.

The automobile museum obviously focuses on cars, but has dozens of motorcycles in its collection as well. Until May 16, it’s showing some of those bikes in an exhibit called Balance & Power: The World on Two Wheels, 1885-1995.

What can you expect at the show? As per the museum’s website, “This exhibit shares highlights of the evolutionary journey from the earliest bikes built in the late 1800s up until the start of the technological boom in the 1990s. From teetering bicycles to roaring superbikes in the space of a century- we will see what makes riders, motorcyclists and bikers thrill to the freedom of the open air.”

The exhibit seems to be broken down into seven sub-sections, focusing on specific historical eras (pre-World War One, interwar, etc.) as well as specific bike styles (scramblers/dirt bikes, scooters). You can see a bike-by-bike listing of all the machines on display here. Over the winter (the exhibit opened February 20), the museum has also been posting pictures and details of the bikes to its Facebook page. The Vintagent also has an excellent write-up on the exhibit and interview with Executive Director & Curator David de Muzio.

Running through the museum’s website, there seems to be a wide range of interesting machines available, including a 1909 Crockett V-twin to a 1995 Ducati 916, and everything in between.

Interested? Find the museum’s online ticket sales here. Hours and address are also listed at that page; no doubt there are restrictions in-place due to COVID-19, so it’s probably best to check the website for details on that before visiting.
