Giant Loop introduces Bümer Bäg airbag safety system

Giant Loop has done it again. Always sure to debut radical new products in early spring, the Oregon-based aftermarket luggage manufacturer is now branching out into the world of offroad safety.

Today, Giant Loop introduces the Bümer Bäg airbag system, designed to integrate with the company’s existing line of soft moto luggage. It goes far beyond the current crop of airbag safety systems, which are only designed to protect the rider’s core. Almost none of the airbag safety designs on the market are designed to protect your lower body; none are designed to protect your motorcycle, not even Honda’s built-in airbag for Gold Wing touring bikes.

How does it work? Giant Loop says it deploys on impact “to instantly bubble wrap riders in ballistic bounce proof protection.” Presumably, there’s some sort of IMU sensor at work here, an accelerometer that detects the crash. The press release says “lean angle sensors inflate the adventure air bags to cushion against rocks and logs and to break falls from moderately sized cliffs.” Interesting, but it gets better. Giant Loop’s presser also says the “Bümer Bäg can be manually deployed as a floatation device for bike and rider.”

Sounds too good to be true, but such an invention would overcome the river-crossing problem that has confronted many adventure riders over the years. Could this serve as a way around the Darien Gap? Maybe!

The system is also incredibly cost-effective, priced at $99.99 and using affordable off-the-shelf C02 cartridges, as commonly found in tire repair kits. Should you puncture the airbag, it’s repairable with tubeless tire plugs.

NEW MOTORCYCLE PRODUCT:
Bümer Bäg™ Air Armor System Integrates with Giant Loop Motorcycle Soft Luggage

(BEND, OR) After a decade of research, development and testing, adventure proof packing systems and gear innovator Giant Loop proudly introduces the world’s first integrated safety air bag system for motorcycles, the Bümer Bäg™. This first-of-its-kind air armor system integrates with Giant Loop’s soft luggage, deploying on impact to instantly bubble wrap riders in ballistic bounce proof protection.

For slower speed off-road riding, electronic lean-angle sensors inflate the adventure air bags to cushion against rocks and logs and to break falls from moderately sized cliffs. In the event of deep water crossings, the Bümer Bäg can be manually deployed as a floatation device for bike and rider.

“We were able to source air bag components directly from automotive industry supplier Takata in Japan,” explains Giant Loop’s chief safety officer, Winn Baggs. “This space age technology is finally being made available to powersports manufacturers.”

To shave pounds and expense, the Bümer Bäg can be recharged with off-the-shelf CO2 cartridges from motorcycle tire repair kits. It is also compatible with tubeless tire plugs for easy repairs.

Perfect for pavement pounders and ground grinders who like to catch giant air, the Giant Loop Bümer Bäg (GL part # BBRAP21) weighs just 98.4 lbs with all included components. USA MSRP is $99.99.
