New Suzuki GSX-S1000 naked bike coming April 26

Suzuki is about to update its GSX-S1000 naked bike.

The current GSX-S1000 series uses a parts bin special design. It’s a naked bike, built in the modern style with a lot of plastic covering the bike’s uglier bits (liquid-cooling system, electronics, etc.). Gone are the days of the lean, mean Ducati Monster and similar stripped-down streetfighters of the 1990s and early 2000s! Some versions of the GSX-S actually came with almost a complete full fairing, like Kawasaki’s Ninja 1000 or Aprilia’s Tuono V4 series.

The GSX-S is based around Suzuki’s K5 engine, as used in the GSX-R1000, but re-tuned for use on the street, with just under 150 horsepower. As always, the press and other horsepower junkies decried this when the bike broke cover back in 2014, but it’s hard to deny it’s a practical move for the street, as usable torque always trumps high-end horsepower in the real world. Suspension on the original series had a reputation for feeling stiff and cheap, with limited adjustability.

In many ways, the GSX-S series (including the 750 models as well) was the spiritual successor to bikes like the Bandit line, or the Katana, following Suzuki’s long and proud history of recycling its solid engines into cheaper chassis to keep costs low.

Now, we see the GSX-S series is getting an update this year. Supposedly, the new 1000 cc naked version will debut on April 26. What to expect? There’s no guarantee at this point, but besides some questionable styling (always the way with Japanese naked bikes), the engine will certainly see an update to Euro5 emissions standard. Aside from that, maybe a limited electronics package, similar to what’s on the V-Strom 1000.
