Registration is now open for this year’s race; this time around, it runs May 21-23 out of Tonopah, Nevada. This event took three years to plan, and it’s the first time it’s been on the schedule for some time. The race runs through the Best In The Desert organization; officially, Rocky Mountain ATV/MC is the title sponsor, and the event is presented by GPR. The return of the Hare & Hound race is a return to the roots of Best In The Desert. The offroad series started with the original World Hare & Hound Championship race 37 years ago. So what will the race look like? There’s a Pro class ($485 entry), Am/Ex class ($275 entry) and 50 cc, 65 cc and 85 cc Youth classes ($60-$90 entry). Expect the usual Best In The Desert action, but with a twist. The organizers have AMA National Hare & Hound champion Russel Pearson as the “hare” at the event. He starts a few minutes ahead of the pack, and if someone catches up to him before the first pit, they earn a $1,000 bounty. If they catch him before Pit 2, they get a $500 bounty (no doubt there is some fine print associated with this!). There’s a $6,000 purse for the top Pro finishers in the men’s and women’s classes, aside from that bounty. “We are pulling out all the stops and hope to create an event that harkens back to the glory days of desert racing,” Race Operations Manager Jeff Phillips said in the event’s press release. “We invite everyone to come out to Tonopah and join us.” If that sounds like it’s your kind of event, head over to the Best In The Desert website and sign up.
