Harley-Davidson Announces Icons Collection

Harley-Davidson is launching a new motorcycle program it is calling the “Icons Collection.”  In a press release, Harley says that the Icons Collection is:

“…an annual program offering very limited edition motorcycle models designed to elevate traditional forms and celebrate Americana, either by revisiting classic Harley-Davidson design themes or by exploring ideas that represent the future of motorcycle style.

The program will present one or two models annually, with only a single production run for each motorcycle model.  According to Harley, production of the limited edition Icons Collection models will never be restarted.  Each of the limited edition series will be serialized, with the purchaser receiving a certificate of authenticity.

Speaking about the Icon Collection bikes, Harley’s Chairman, President, and CEO Jochen Zeitz said:

“With The Hardwire, we made a commitment to introduce a series of motorcycles that align with our strategy to increase desirability and to drive the legacy of Harley-Davidson.  With that in mind, I am proud to introduce our new limited edition Icons Collection, a series of extraordinary adaptations of production motorcycles which look to our storied past and bright future.”

First is the Electra Glide® Revival™

The first Icons Collection machine is the Electra Glide® Revival™.  Harley says that it is “a retro-classic motorcycle for the nostalgist who longs to ride a bike with style both distinctive and timeless.”

The Electra Glide Revival takes its inspiration from the 1969 Electra Glide, Harley’s first motorcycle available with an accessory “batwing” fairing.  Over time, the fairing has become an iconic and imitated Harley styling cue.  Its shape became an instant on-the-road identifier of many Harley-Davidson models.  Today, the foundational design of the fairing is featured on current models.

Factory accessory fairings were rare in 1969.  And Harley only offered the bike’s fairing and saddlebags in white molded fiberglass.  The Electra Glide Revival replicates that look with a Birch White painted finish.  A period-inspired tank medallion and Electra Glide script on the front fender complete the look of the new Icon Collection machine.

It comes in a single color scheme inspired by the original 1969 colorway: The two-tone fuel tank in Hi-Fi Blue and Black Denim bisected with a Birch White stripe, with Hi-Fi Blue paint on the fenders and side panels.

Design highlights of the Electra Glide Revival model include a solo saddle with a black-and-white cover and a chrome rail.  It is mounted over an adjustable coil spring and shock absorber, which is also a nod to Harley-Davidson FL models from the 1960s and a functional feature that adds rider comfort.

Chrome steel laced wheels and wide whitewall tires add to the bike’s nostalgic look, as does the chrome on front fender rails and saddlebag rails, front fender skirt, Ventilator air cleaner cover, fork covers, and auxiliary lights.   According to Harley, old-school cool never looked so good.

Milwaukee power

The new machine carries the MoCo’s Milwaukee Eight® 114 v-twin engine.  It displaces 114 cubic inches and provides a claimed 118 ft. lb. of torque @ 3,250 RPM.  Each head features four valves for increased airflow and higher power output.  Dual spark plugs offer a more complete combustion of the air/fuel charge to maximize power and efficiency.

Electra Glide Revival Features

Harley says that the Electra Glide Revival maintains the original’s classic styling.  However, they also say that the new machine’s design and technology are modern.

A single spar frame with a rigid backbone design sustains the weight of luggage.  It also readily supports the weight and power of its engine.  According to Harley, the entire chassis’s design is “…for the long haul.”

A single knob allows the rider to adjust the preload of the bike’s “…emulsion-technology rear shocks “…for optimal ride and control”.  It also features a 49mm fork with dual bending valve suspension technology to deliver linear damping characteristics for a smooth ride.

A Bat Wing fairing features a tall clear windshield with a splitstream vent to help reduce buffeting.  Keeping the ride steady is electronic cruise control.  Lighting comes from a halogen headlamp with incandescent auxiliary lamps to “…provide outstanding illumination and maintain the nostalgic styling.

Inside the fairing is a Boom!™ Box GTS infotainment system with a color touch screen.  Two fairing speakers provide the sound while advanced navigation and hand and voice commands (when paired with a compatible headset) plus Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® compatibility keep you entertained.

Lastly, each Electra Glide Revival model comes with a suite of Harley RDRS Safety enhancements.  The system contains a suite of technology designed to match motorcycle performance to available traction during acceleration, deceleration, and braking.  Components of the RDRS include:

• Cornering Enhanced Anti-Lock Brake System (C-ABS), Cornering Enhanced Electronic Linked Braking (C-ELB), and Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TCS)
• Drag-torque Slip Control System (DSCS)
• Hill Hold Control (HHC)

Harley will only build 1,500 Electra Glide® Revival™ bikes worldwide.  They should begin arriving on dealer showroom floors by late April and will carry an MSRP of $29,199.
