Royal Enfield Trademarks The Name “Shotgun”

According to Bikewale, Royal Enfield (through their parent Eicher Motors) has filed a Wordmark application for the name Royal Enfield Shotgun.  In its application, Royal Enfield indicates that the word Shotgun could be for motorcycles, motorized scooters, and electrically powered motorcycles (among other things).

The new name could be for use on one of the many new machines that Royal Enfiled CEO Vinod Dasari has said will be rolled out in the next two to three years.  But what category of bike will use the Shotgun name?  Several Indian publications say that the name may appear on a new Royal Enfield “cruiser.”

Further, VisorDown speculates that the name may be found on a cruiser design that could use a similar engine for various models.  Something like the approach that Royal Enfield is taking with its 650 twin-engine machines such as the Continental GT and INT 650.

They say that the use of a gun theme is in keeping with the brand’s tradition of using guns and gun paraphernalia in their model lineup, for example, the Royal Enfield Bullet.  On the other hand, the name could simply be paying homage to the brand’s former motto, “Made Like A Gun,” and its logo comprising a cannon.   Perhaps if the name Shotgun finds its way onto a new Royal Enfield “cruiser,” then perhaps it could be an indication of a twin-cylinder engine bike with ubiquitous shotgun pipes?
