The iconic Isle of Man TT races will not run again in 2021.  But the Isle of Man government is already planning for the 2022 event.  And there’s some good news for the TT’s future.

It appears that a live video coverage will become a reality for the next Isle of Man TT.  According to Autosport, the coverage will broadcast every qualifying session and every race over the two weeks of the TT.

You’ll be able to watch them all on a dedicated digital channel accessible via a live pass similar to the pass you can purchase for MotoGP and WorldSBK.  In addition, Autosport also says that the new digital channel will offer year-round original content.  The details surrounding the launch of the channel are still sketchy other than it will launch next spring.

Live video coverage logistical challenges

There are may logistical challenges to bringing an event of its size.  Exactly how the race will be covered is also unclear.  For example, how will the “broadcaster” cover the happenings on a race circuit that is nearly 38 miles long?  How many cameras would be needed to cover just a portion of a course while keeping the happenings relevant and interesting.

There is also the continuing concern that live coverage could capture the death of a competitor.  The Isle of Man is a dangerous undertaking and many fatalities have occurred during the competition.  Because of this, it’s possible that the event could be on a “tape-delay of a few seconds.

According to Visordown, the interest in the event growing around the world, particularly in the USA.  Live video coverage could enhance people’s awareness of real road racing.  But live video coverage could also be a double edged sword.  Yes, it may raise awareness and excitement, but it also could put the real danger of the event in the limelight, particularly if the coverage catches the death of one or more competitors.

What do you think about live coverage of the Isle of Man?  Do you think that it is a positive or negative thing for TT racing in general?  Would you purchase a video pass if it becomes available in the USA?
