advrider
Big news from Moto Guzzi today, as the company confirmed its plans for the new V100 sport, and also announced updates to its Italian factory to expand production and turn it into a destination for Guzzi fans. The Moto Guzzi V100 Only a few days ago, we saw our first glimpses of the Moto Guzzi V100. Spied at a photoshoot, the V100 appeared to be a retro sport tourer based around an upgraded V85 engine. Now, we’ve got official photos, above and below. These images are straight from Moto Guzzi, so you know they’re legit. The photos show a serious mid-’80s superbike influence. It sure looks as if that engine is liquid-cooled, not air/oil-cooled like the V85 it was supposedly based on. Did Moto Guzzi just take an existing engine and add liquid-cooled heads? It worked for BMW in the final-generation R1200 models, so why not? The press release doesn’t give much away; it just says “The motorcycle’s stunning lines, cutting-edge engine and state-of-the-art technologies introduce the Moto Guzzi brand for the next one hundred years,” and that probably is another hint towards liquid cooling. Guzzi’s bigwigs showed the bike off in the flesh at the factory today, promising a full reveal at EICMA. Speaking of the Moto Guzzi factory … This machine appears to have a much-upgraded V85 engine. Photo: Moto Guzzi Expansion plans Moto Guzzi also announced plans to expand its factory significantly, with an eye towards increasing production capacity and also making the factory itself a destination for visitors: Commissioned from world-famous US architect and designer Greg Lynn, the redevelopment will involve the entire site. Unique of its kind and in its style, this is a futuristic project: a location with open spaces for use by the public, a meeting place for the community, founded on culture, design and mechanics, with a strong green focus in line with contemporary trends. Constant attention to environmental sustainability and efficient use of resources. The new buildings will make use of the existing structures, with materials chosen with close attention to efficient energy management, thanks to photovoltaic systems and eco-sustainable materials. The site will be a focal point for Guzzi bikers and for young people and international tourists interested in the astonishing unique features of its motorcycles. The extension of the factory’s production capacity, to match the constant growth in demand, will be part of a completely new approach to the layout of Mandello. In addition to the new factory, the project will create new conference facilities to host both internal and external events, as well as a hotel and a restaurant for a complete range of amenities to welcome visitors from around the world. So: A new conference centre, a hotel, a restaurant, and increased production capacity. It’s supposed to break ground in 2025. Quite a way to celebrate Moto Guzzi’s 100th anniversary, but these all sound like moves aimed at bringing the brand up to compete with its Italian rivals. People come from all over the world to celebrate World Ducati Week. Maybe these new facilities can inspire more Moto Guzzi faithful to make the same pilgrimage? After all, there’s something special about a motorcycle manufacturing company that’s actually still making motorcycles in its original factory, instead of outsourcing everything to the developing world.
