Yamaha announces MT-10 SP for North America

Yamaha’s announced several machines coming to North America for 2022, including the MT-10 SP, a high-spec version of the updated-for-2022 MT-10 naked bike that we already saw announced in Europe a while back. The standard MT-10 is also coming in, as is the XSR900 neo-retro. Yamaha has also confirmed the FJR1300ES is coming to both Canada and the US for 2022, although it seems the markets will get slightly different versions of the bike.

MT-10 SP: Upgraded hypernaked

As far as Japanese naked bikes go, the MT-10 SP makes a good claim for king of the heap (unless you count the supercharged Kawasaki H2 series). The updated MT-10 got a significant engine overhaul for 2022, and Yamaha says the updated four-cylinder (adapted from the R1’s crossplane engine) has considerable more torque and power in the 4,000-8,000 rpm range, and makes 164 horsepower at the crank.

It seems the SP model has the same engine, and the same electronics package (which is also a big improvement over the previous MT-10, with new six-axis IMU). So what’s different, to make this worth the extra money and fancy name? You get: A new three-piece bellypan … stainless steel brake lines … a unique paint job. Oh yeah, and new Ohlins Smart EC 2.0 semi-active suspension!

Here’s what Yamaha’s website says about it:

The new MT-10 SP is the first production motorcycle to be fitted with the Öhlins’ next generation electronically controlled suspension employing the latest spool valve damping. This state-of-the-art technology provides an even greater range of damping adjustments and a higher degree of response. Riders can choose between three semi-active damping modes (A-1, A-2, A-3), as well as three manual setting modes (M-1, M-2, M-3). When an automatic mode is selected the system adjusts rebound and compression damping continuously to match the current running conditions, ensuring the most appropriate settings are always in play. Manual modes allow precise electronic adjustment of compression and rebound damping for both the front fork and rear shock.

Asking price for the new Yamaha MT-10 SP is $16,899 in the US, and $21,099 in Canada.

Other models confirmed

With the SP model confirmed, the standard MT-10 is also coming to North America, priced at $13,999 in the US, and $17,299 in Canada. The XSR900 neo-retro (ADVrider first showed this bike here, at its Euro release) is also confirmed for the US ($9,999 MSRP) and Canada ($12,299 MSRP).

And, the FJR1300ES is also coming back, again. This bike has more lives than the White House’s pardoned Thanksgiving turkey, as every year we hear it’s going to be canned, but it keeps coming back. The US will pay $18,199 for the 2022 model; in Canada, there’s a 20th Anniversary model, priced at $20,899.
