advrider
Pierer Mobility Group AG, the Austrian-run umbrella over motorcycle makers KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas, says bike sales saw a strong boost in 2021 after steep declines in 2020 when the world hunkered down to (not) ride out the pandemic. While the company did not break down the 23 percent rise in sales by brand or category, KTM moved over 332,000 units, so it’s likely every brand and product category (Husqvarna and GasGas also makes ebikes now) rose with the tide as people put down their TV remotes and hankered to get back in the saddle. At the same time, KTM bagged their first-ever MotoGP race win this last season, further boosting the brand’s cred and visibility for road bike riders. As the pandemic raged, KTM saw sales swoon by 33 percent in the first half of 2020, while most other motorcycle makers also saw declines before industry sales figures strongly rebounded heading into 2021. Bicycling and riding motorcycles are likely some of the most effective social-distancing activities people can partake in, and the popularity of ebikes exploded during the pandemic and continues to grow. Pierer Mobility Group (PMG) also sells ebikes under the R Raymon marque. PMG sold over 100,000 bicycles last year, of which 75 percent were ebikes. Again, there was no specific breakdown of sales by brand, category or model, but ebikes, dirt bikes and off-road capable bikes were especially strong sellers industry-wide in 2021, all categories that play to PMG’s focus. The big boost in sales reeled in about €2 billion ($2.3B USD) for PMG. The company sells bikes in Europe, North America, India, and Australia, and also has a partnership with India scooter maker Bajaj.
