American Honda Motor Company (Honda) is recalling certain CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP motorcycles due to the potential of an oil leak and fire.  According to Honda, on affected bikes and under certain riding conditions, the bike’s exhaust pipe could overheat, which in turn can melt the oil cooler pipe and cause it to fail.

CBR1000RR-R SP Safety Recall Report

Honda’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says 331 motorcycles are affected.

In the report, Honda says:

“Under certain driving conditions, such as when the motorcycle is following behind a vehicle, the exhaust pipe may not receive sufficient airflow and cooling.  If this happens, excessive radiated heat from the exhaust pipe could melt and rupture the oil cooler pipe.”

Describing the safety risk, Honda says:

“Oil leakage from a ruptured oil cooler pipe can leak onto the exhaust pipe and/or adhere to the rear tire, increasing the risk of a fire, crash, or injury.”

The motorcycles affected by this recall are as follows:
