The new European helmet safety standard continues to result in manufacturers introducing new models and overhauling their lineups. Now, Euro customers can buy the new Scorpion ADX-2 modular adventure helmet, safer than previous ADV modulars (including the ADX-1, which was in Scorpion’s lineup for five years). Pricing for the new Scorpion is around 250 euros, which works out to $280 US or $360 CAD.

The ADX-2 has a peak to shade your eyes, like most ADV lids, as well as a bit of an extended chinbar, for better air circulation when offroading. The peak is removable to improve the helmet’s aerodynamics at highway speeds. There’s a drop-down sun visor, the liner is detachable for washing, and the shield is Pinlock-compatible.

All standard stuff, and at first glance, the ADX-2 looks pretty much the same as the outgoing model. The key difference is that the new helmet meets the new ECE 22.06 motorcycle helmet safety standard. This means the new helmet meets safety ratings with the chinbar flipped down, but also meets a safety standard when the front of the helmet is flipped up.

Previously, flip-front helmets generally met safety standards when they had the chinbar locked in place, but were not certified with the front flipped up. There were rare exceptions, but now thanks to new European rules, all helmets sold there must be certified in either condition.

The new standard also takes a wider range of impact speeds into consideration, along with angled impact vs. direct impacts (which is all the older ECE 22.05 standard considered). And, with the new rules banning the sale of older helmets eventually, we will see all Euro-legal helmets conforming to the new standard, which means new helmet models from all manufacturers.

For that reason, we’d also expect these new helmets to start arriving in North America soon, and we will hopefully benefit indirectly from European regulations. The old ECE 22.05 standard was quite dated, and helmet design and materials have come a long way since then. It’s time we saw the manufacturers goaded into improving their helmets as a result.
