advrider
Among other brands, Aprilia sits under Piaggio’s wide and stylish Italian umbrella, and a new scooter caught our attention recently as it looks ready to get dirty—or at least take on the crumbling urban infrastructure that seems more common on every ride. Called the Aprilia SR GT 200, the urban prowler features a 17.5-horsepower 174cc liquid-cooled four-valve fuel injected single coupled to the usual twist-and-go scoot transmission, but a few features stand out that indicate this scoot could wander off the pavement on occasion. The front forks feature 120mm/4.7-inches of pothole absorbing travel, and only a bit less out back on the twin shocks. The stock tires on the large-ish 14-inch front and 13-inch rear wheels sport a bit more aggressive tread than your typical street scoot; upgrading to something a bit more knobbied and burly should be easy. LED lights, a full LCD dash, optional smartphone connectivity and wavy disc rotors help round out the tech suite. OK Aprilia, it’s time to send this thing stateside. For scooters of this size to carry almost three gallons of gas is unusual, but Aprilia is positioning it as a go-anywhere kind of machine, so a little extra in the tank is welcome while trying to find the road you left earlier in the ride. Wide LCD dash panel is a nice touch. The price looks to be about $4,800 US, which translates to about 551,500 yen. The price and displacement positions the SR GT 200 a bit above the popular $4,300 Honda ADV150, which helped to give the whole “adventure scooter” niche a push last year. Honda also offers the larger and faster ADV350 in many Asian markets but not in the US—yet. Here’s hoping. Meanwhile the SR GT 200 offers a bit more pop than the 150cc tier while falling just short of true expressway capabilities. But in town, it could be just the right size. We get scooters aren’t for everyone, but if it could venture down a forest service road (with confidence) or get you to work and back in style, would you consider one? Let us know in comments.
