Energica, the sole electric motorcycle provider for the FIM’s MotoE electric motorcycle championship series, is branching out. Although its reign in the MotoE series will end this year, sales of its electric motorcycles continue to increase.

Apparently, Energica’s success is driving the company towards selling its electric vehicle technology to other companies. The company has already announced that it is teaming with Sealance to develop electric yachts.

To support these new outside ventures, Energica is developing what it calls the “Energica Inside” business unit. The new company is a separate business unit that plans to help other manufacturers enhance their electric powertrain development using Energica’s proprietary technology.

With 10 years of EV development in its pocket, Energica has a stockpile of proprietary technology, and that technology has substantial value.

According to Carlo Lacovini, Energica Inside’s General Manager, creating the new business unit “…will support our clients in the transition to ecological powertrains and strengthen our role as Electric Valley pioneers. “And the new unit will not only offer its expertise for electric motorcycle powertrains. It will also provide its services “…for the development of new technologies for powertrain components and modular powertrain systems for road, sea, and aerial transport applications, and also for specific industrial uses.”

Not the only one

While Energica’s move might seem like a novel idea, they are not the first to sell their tech. Zero Motorcycles is also selling its expertise. Zero and Polaris have entered into a 10-year exclusive partnership to co-develop and produce a line of electrically powered off-road vehicles and snow machines.

It will be interesting to see how many other electric vehicle manufacturers take a similar route. Selling proprietary tech is big business. Could Harley-Davidson’s Livewire business unit be next?
