There’s a new MX series coming to the US and Canada this fall. The FIM, international sanctioning body behind all sorts of racing from street to dirt to desert, has announced the new North America Continental Championship, with race stops in the province of Ontario and the state of Pennsylvania.

Wait, what? Why?

Good question. Here’s the official explanation from the FIM:

Riders will be able race both events with the hopes of earning FIM North America Continental Championship honors. The intent of this championship is to give racers from Canada and the United States a unique opportunity to compete against each other for championship honors, and with events in both the United States and Canada, racers contesting both events have the opportunity to race on foreign and home soil.

So, was this a thing that riders were asking for? Uh, maybe. Or maybe it’s the FIM’s way of trying to kickstart the Canadian Motorcycle Association back into action, after the CMA basically let its involvement in Canadian moto racing dwindle for years. Officially, the series organizers say:

Championship classes will include Supermini, 250 A, Open A, 250 B, Open B, 250 A/B All Star, Open A/B All Star, Vet 30+, Senior 40+ and Women. Additional Support Classes will be available at both events. The High Point event will utilize classes from the PAMX series which will be racing in conjunction with the event, and likewise MotoPark will offer support classes similar to the PAMX series.

It doesn’t sound like it’s going to be aimed at elite Supercrossers, then.

There’s been little buzz about the races so far, except for the initial announcement. We do know the dates for the first set of races run September 10-11 at Moto Park in Chatsworth, Ontario. The second set of races run October 1-2 in Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania.
