Norton Motorcycles hasn’t been a true market force in decades, but that is almost certainly going to change, thanks to a massive investment from new owners. TVS Motors, the India-based moto-manufacturing giant that bought the British company, says it is had invested £100 million into Norton, which works out to more than $125 million USD!

The story so far

How did we get to this point, with Indian companies dumping huge cash in the UK? In the motorcycle scene, Royal Enfield paved the way here, with the India-based spin-off forging onward as the parent company closed in the 1970s, Eventually, RE made it full circle by investing in UK-based R&D in the 2010s, including a buyout of famous chassis builders Harris Performance.

TVS is following a similar route after buying Norton about two years ago. Most readers will remember the debacle at that time, when tax trouble caught up with the boutique Brit bike manufacturer, and CEO Stuart Garner ended up accused (and later convicted) of all sorts of financial scammery. (By the way, in case you missed our story earlier this month, Garner has dodged a jail term despite stealing millions in pension funds!).

In the midst of this negativity, TVS appears to be trying to sort the mess out properly, including a commitment to complete the building of bikes that Norton customers had paid deposits on.

The road ahead

So what’s next? The reborn Norton has already teased a hot new 1200cc V4, and with this massive investment from TVS, it seems likely we’ll see something exciting in the near future. TVS also has a partnership with BMW Motorrad (it manufactures BMW’s 310-series bikes), as well as its own list of Indian-market machines. It seems unlikely to expect something like those bargain bikes from Norton, given TVS’s huge cash infusion, and Norton’s history as a premium marque, which TVS seems intent on continuing. Instead, we’d expect a V4 superbike in the near future, and after that, the sky is the limit.
