advrider
The COVID-19 recovery boom continues in Europe, but there might be a problem ahead. MotorCycles Data, a company that claims to specialize in numbers-crunching the moto industry for its customers (find out more here), says 2022’s Q1 was another solid growth spurt for Europe’s motorcycle industry. Sort of. If you trust the numbers from MotorCycles Data, you’ll see motorcycles and scooters sales rose 8 percent year-over-year in 2022’s first quarter, when compared to the first quarter of 2021. That’s good, right? MotorCycles Data says the problem is that sales grew very quickly in the first weeks of 2022, and then tapered off as the Russian military action unfolded in Ukraine: The Russian war to Ukraine has changed the industry scenario, not only in the short, but in the middle terms, due to the new energy policy which should be adopted by western European countries. In addition, the fast growing inflation will reduce the purchase power in the middle term while in the short, the huge increase of petrol is penalizing vehicles purchase, shifting more rapidly than before the focus on electric vehicles. Unfortunately, these vehicles are not available is large scale and just few models in the market have design and performance comparable with ICE models. Following a roaring start in January (+22%) the European market has progressively lost the steam ending the first quarter 2022 with 341.869 sales (+8.1%) with March up only 2.5%. Indeed, if you follow up with a scan of industry headlines from the start of this year, you’ll see sales were going fabulously well, but more recent reports from Europe, as well as North America, show things have changed. As gas prices rise and inflation eats away at buyers’ discretionary income, sales appear to be sliding closer to 2019’s pre-COVID numbers. That’s certainly bad news for the industry as a whole, but if you’ve been waiting for a new bike, it’s possible the supply/demand curve may finally be tipping back in your favor … Vezi sursa
