advrider
If two wheels are good, and four wheels are bad, where do three wheels fit in? Hard to say, but Yamaha continues its Tricity scooter production run with updated models for 2023, report the European mags. That’s right—this is the news coming out of Europe, because once again, North America gets passed over. These leaning three-wheeled scooters will not come to the US or Canada. What’s new for 2023? Looks like a series of refinements; the Blue Core engine is updated with new piston and head, a new intake valve, and more compression. It now meets Euro5 emissions standards, but thanks to the updates and Yamaha’s variable valve timing system, it’s supposed to still have snappy acceleration. The running gear also sees an overhaul. The trick two-wheeled front end is refined to improve handling. The frame is stretched, for better stability, and that also means changes to the rear suspension, which should improve range of travel. As sound emission regulation is an important part of the Euro5 rulebook, Yamaha also went to considerable effort to quieten the engine, and even included a system that shuts off the engine at stops, re-starting when you twist the throttle as the light turns green. Such systems have been common on cars for years, but variations have only been available on luxury motorcycles. Now, we see it applied to Yamaha’s grocery-getters. Manufacturers also increasingly push mobile device integration into new vehicles, and the Tricity lineup follows this trend with Yamaha’s MyRide app. Here in North America, it seems unlikely we’ll see the Tricity anytime soon, as even the Niken has been canceled here. The Niken leaning three-wheeler has completely disappeared from Yamaha’s Canadian website, and is only on the US website as a leftover 2019 model.
